- RBC is blocking third-party personal AI agents from authenticated online banking services.
- Customers can continue using RBC's official website, mobile app and own digital tools.
- The policy reflects security and privacy concerns as AI agents become more autonomous.
Royal Bank of Canada said on October 28 that it is blocking third-party personal AI agents from direct access to authenticated RBC digital properties, including online banking. The bank cited security and privacy concerns as autonomous tools gain the ability to act on behalf of customers.
In its RBC Thought Leadership article, the bank said personal AI agents may need access to online accounts and may store passwords. RBC said the potential consequences include fraud, consumer harm and risks that could spread through the financial system.
Security takes priority over automation
The restriction covers third-party agents such as Meta's Muse when they attempt to access authenticated RBC services. It does not represent a general ban on artificial intelligence at the bank. RBC said customers can continue to use its official website and mobile app, its own digital tools and customer service channels.
RBC also highlighted its Digital Banking Security Guarantee for eligible unauthorized transactions, subject to customer responsibilities and the conditions of the relevant agreements. The policy therefore draws a line between RBC-controlled digital services and outside tools that may act using a customer's credentials.
For investors, the move emphasizes the operational and reputational risks banks face as agentic AI develops. It may protect account security, but it also limits some potential efficiency gains from automated personal finance tools. The announcement does not by itself indicate a change to RBC's earnings outlook or capital policy.
