- Canadian banks are drawing a sharper line between bank-controlled digital services and third-party agents.
- RBC says customers can continue using its website, mobile app and own digital tools.
- The policy addresses security and liability risks without changing RBC's earnings or capital outlook.
Royal Bank of Canada is extending a wider Canadian banking response to third-party artificial intelligence agents. A Global News report said TD and RBC are blocking such agents, while BMO has taken steps to ban access, CIBC does not support direct account access and Scotiabank is limiting access.
Security takes priority over automation
RBC said on October 28 that third-party personal AI agents will be blocked from authenticated RBC digital properties, including online banking. The bank cited security and privacy concerns as autonomous tools gain the ability to act on behalf of customers.
The restriction does not amount to a general ban on artificial intelligence at RBC. Customers can continue to use the bank's official website and mobile app, its own digital tools and customer service channels. RBC has also highlighted its Digital Banking Security Guarantee for eligible unauthorized transactions, subject to its conditions and customer responsibilities.
What the broader bank response means
For investors, the decisions show that Canadian banks are treating direct agent access as a distinct operational and liability risk. They may protect account security while limiting some efficiency gains from automated personal finance tools. The RBC announcement does not by itself indicate a change to the bank's earnings outlook or capital policy.
