- Rolls-Royce is due to publish its third-quarter trading update on Thursday, November 12.
- Fidelity International says engine servicing, oil prices and the company's elevated valuation are central investor concerns.
- The update should clarify whether aftermarket activity remains strong after Safran reported slower growth in that business.
Rolls-Royce Holdings is heading toward a key investor checkpoint on Thursday, November 12, when the company is scheduled to publish its third-quarter trading update. The company’s investor calendar lists the update for 7:00 a.m. GMT.
Rolls-Royce stock traded at EUR 15.04 on Lang & Schwarz at 11:15:19 CET on Monday, November 2, 1.14 percent above the Xetra close of Friday, October 30. Investors can follow the real-time quote of Rolls-Royce stock.
Service Revenue Sets The Tone
Fidelity International’s analysis, published on October 29, says the main issue is the group’s exposure to engine servicing. Large aircraft engines can generate limited profit when sold, while long-term maintenance contracts provide the recurring economics that support the civil aerospace business.
The backdrop became more demanding after French engine maker Safran reported slower growth in its aftermarket operation, according to Fidelity. That development has increased investor focus on engine flying activity and the durability of Rolls-Royce’s maintenance revenues. Rising oil prices could also weigh on airline activity if carriers reduce flights or delay expansion.
Fidelity says Rolls-Royce had not published weak profit figures or cut its forecasts before the November update. The firm’s shares had nevertheless fallen in October, leaving investors to reassess expectations after a strong multi-year advance. Fidelity calculates that the shares had risen more than nine-fold over five years and were trading at about 23 times forecast earnings in its October 29 analysis.
Valuation Raises The Stakes
That valuation leaves less room for disappointment. The November update will give investors a fresh indication of whether service activity is holding up and whether the assumptions behind the current earnings multiple remain credible. It may also help distinguish a temporary market repricing from a change in the operating outlook.
