- Rivian delivered a record 19,248 vehicles in the third quarter as R2 became its best-selling model by volume.
- Management raised 2026 delivery guidance and lowered the midpoint of its capital expenditure outlook.
- The company still targets positive R2 gross margin by year-end while overall profitability remains dependent on production scale.
Rivian Automotive beat Wall Street expectations in the third quarter ended September 30, as the production ramp of its R2 SUV strengthened deliveries and revenue. CNBC reported adjusted loss per share of 48 cents, compared with an expected loss of 62 cents, while revenue reached 2.16 billion US dollars against an estimate of 1.99 billion US dollars.
The company delivered a record 19,248 vehicles from July through September. R2, whose first customer deliveries began in June, became Rivian's best-selling model by volume and accounted for much of the quarter-over-quarter delivery gain, according to the company.
Guidance Moves Higher, Spending Lower
Rivian raised its 2026 delivery outlook to 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles from a previous floor of 65,000. The company also improved its adjusted EBITDA loss outlook by 100 million US dollars at the midpoint, to a range of 1.75 billion to 1.85 billion US dollars.
Capital expenditure guidance was reduced by 300 million US dollars at the midpoint to 1.4 billion to 1.5 billion US dollars. Management attributed the change mainly to the timing of spending, while the Georgia factory is expected to require a meaningful increase in capital expenditure in 2027.
Profitability Still Depends On Scale
Rivian reported a consolidated gross profit of 176 million US dollars, compared with 24 million US dollars a year earlier. The automotive segment nevertheless recorded an 80 million US dollar gross loss, including 120 million US dollars in incremental costs linked to the R2 production ramp.
Management reiterated its expectation that R2 will reach positive gross margin by the end of 2026. The company expects R2 to account for most deliveries in the fourth quarter, making production execution and supplier capacity important milestones for the next phase of the launch.
