Rio Tinto stock faces a fresh test after its third-quarter production update. Copper growth and iron ore sales support momentum, but restart risk remains.

Production Momentum Meets Execution Risk

  • Oyu Tolgoi copper production rose 27 percent year over year in the third quarter.
  • Global iron ore sales increased 3 percent, while full-year guidance remained unchanged.
  • The staged restart after a seismic event remains the next operational test.

Rio Tinto's third-quarter production update showed stronger copper and iron ore operations, while the staged restart at Oyu Tolgoi remains a key execution test. The company's official release was published on October 14, before a seismic event later disrupted underground operations in Mongolia.

Rio Tinto stock traded at 72.86 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 18:38 CET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. That was 1.63 percent below the 74.07-euro quote cited in the previous November 2 report, providing a fresh market signal for this second report. The latest quote is not paired here with a verified November 3 Xetra close.

Oyu Tolgoi Drives Copper Growth

Rio Tinto said Oyu Tolgoi copper production rose 27 percent year over year in the third quarter and 29 percent in the first nine months. The mine operated at an annualized rate of about 450,000 tonnes during the quarter, strengthening its role in the group's copper expansion.

Group copper production was 205,000 tonnes in the quarter, unchanged from a year earlier, as gains at Oyu Tolgoi offset weaker output elsewhere. The company kept its 2026 copper guidance range unchanged at 800,000 to 870,000 tonnes.

Iron Ore Sales Hold Momentum

Global iron ore sales reached 90.8 million tonnes, up 3 percent year over year, while Pilbara sales rose 2 percent to 85.7 million tonnes. Simandou reached an annualized production rate of about 10 million tonnes in the quarter and remains on track for a 60-million-tonne rate in the second half of 2028, according to the Rio Tinto production release.

Rio Tinto also said it had achieved more than 2 billion US dollars of capital releases year to date and remained on track to announce about 5 billion US dollars of initiatives by the end of 2026. Lithium production rose 33 percent year to date, although full-year output is tracking at the lower end of guidance.

Restart Is the Next Catalyst

The Oyu Tolgoi restart follows a localized rockfall on October 29 that injured three employees. Rio Tinto said the incident had no structural impact on the underground cave or operating infrastructure, but it has not quantified production losses or set a timetable for completing the restart.

For investors, the next focus is the pace of the restart, any effect on copper shipments and the company's capital-release execution. The real-time quote of Rio Tinto stock remains the direct reference for the latest trading indication.
