Q3 momentum meets legal pressure

  • Comparable order intake rose 8 percent, led by Diagnosis & Treatment.
  • Philips kept its 2026 sales, margin and free-cash-flow targets unchanged.
  • A proposed Respironics settlement produced a 288 million euro provision and is expected to be paid in the first quarter of 2027.

Philips reported stronger operating momentum in the third quarter, but a new Respironics legal provision sharply reduced reported profit. In its results released on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Dutch healthcare technology group said comparable order intake rose 8 percent, while comparable sales increased 3 percent to 4.39 billion euros. The figures were reported by RTT News.

Orders support the operating recovery

Adjusted EBITA increased to 569 million euros from 531 million euros a year earlier. The adjusted EBITA margin expanded to 13.0 percent from 12.3 percent, with Philips citing higher sales, gross-margin improvement and productivity measures. Cost inflation partly offset those gains.

Income from operations fell to 165 million euros from 330 million euros. Net income declined to 28 million euros, or 0.03 euro per share, from 187 million euros, or 0.19 euro per share, in the prior-year quarter. The decline primarily reflected the 288 million euro provision linked to an agreement in principle between Philips Respironics and the US Department of Justice.

Personal Health and Connected Care supported comparable sales growth, while sales in Diagnosis & Treatment were flat. The strongest order momentum came from Diagnosis & Treatment, giving the company additional visibility for future deliveries even as shipment timing and weaker demand in China affected quarterly sales.

Outlook remains unchanged

Philips reiterated its full-year 2026 targets. The company continues to expect comparable sales growth of 3 percent to 4.5 percent, an adjusted EBITA margin of 13.5 percent to 14.0 percent and free cash flow of 1.5 billion euros to 1.7 billion euros. The margin outlook includes an expected US tariff-refund benefit of approximately 1 percent, while the free-cash-flow range includes a net benefit of approximately 200 million euros.

The outlook assumes payment of the proposed Department of Justice settlement in the first quarter of 2027, subject to final documentation. Philips said other ongoing Respironics-related proceedings, including an investigation by US state attorneys general, are excluded from the outlook. For investors, the stronger order book and margin trend provide operating support, while legal costs remain a material source of earnings volatility.
