- VEEV shipments climbed 61.6% in the third quarter, while smoke-free product shipments rose 2.7%.
- Quarterly revenue increased 5.5% to USD 11.4 billion, according to the earnings-call summary.
- Management highlighted continued VEEV expansion across Europe and selected markets outside the region.
Philip Morris International added fresh detail to its third-quarter growth story on October 21, with VEEV e-vapor shipments rising 61.6% from a year earlier. A Yahoo Finance summary of the company's earnings call said the result reflected continued expansion of the smoke-free portfolio.
VEEV strengthens PMI's growth mix
VEEV was the fastest-growing product category in the quarter. Smoke-free product shipments increased 2.7% to 48.2 billion equivalent units, while total shipments rose 0.6% to 206.2 billion units. Heated tobacco units increased 1.5% to 41.5 billion, and oral smoke-free products grew 1.8%.
The broader revenue picture also remained positive. Third-quarter net revenue rose 5.5% to USD 11.4 billion, while adjusted diluted earnings per share reached USD 2.36, according to the earnings-call summary. Adjusted operating income exceeded USD 5 billion for the first time, supported by pricing, product mix and growth in smoke-free categories.
Management pointed to VEEV's strengthening position in European closed-pod markets and to progress in markets including Indonesia, Egypt, Malaysia and South Korea. Year-to-date VEEV shipments increased 68% to 4.0 billion equivalent units, giving the product a growing role in Philip Morris's shift beyond traditional cigarettes.
Pricing supports the combustible business
The combustible business supplied a more defensive contribution. Cigarette shipments were broadly flat at 158.0 billion units, despite a reported 1.1% decline for the wider industry. Pricing helped offset the mature category's volume pressure, while Zyn nicotine-pouch shipments in the United States rose 4% in the quarter, or 13% excluding a prior-year promotion.
The earnings-call summary also cited cost pressure from geopolitical conflicts and continued investment in the US Zyn business. Management expects fourth-quarter US adjusted operating income to be around zero or slightly negative as the company supports a transition to 20-pouch cans and expands selected products. That combination leaves smoke-free volume growth as the central operating lever for investors.
