- TIKR said PDD's first-half operating margin improved year over year, while net income still declined.
- Temu compliance costs and the European parcel duty remain central risks for international expansion.
- Third-quarter results are expected to clarify whether gross margin and advertising growth can stabilize.
PDD Holdings enters a new earnings test as investors weigh a steadier first-half gross margin against continued pressure on profitability and Temu's international cost base. A November 6 analysis by TIKR said the next quarterly report, expected in mid-to-late November, will put the margin outlook in focus.
Margins improve, but profits remain pressured
TIKR said PDD's operating margin reached 21.7% in the first half of 2026, compared with 21.0% a year earlier. Second-quarter gross margin rose to 57.3% from 55.9%, but net income for the first half declined 13% after a RMB 9.4 billion other loss below operating profit.
The analysis also highlighted a more difficult longer-term backdrop. Revenue increased 9.7% in 2025 to RMB 431.8 billion, while operating profit fell 14% to RMB 93.1 billion. Analysts expect revenue growth to resume in 2026, but their forecasts also imply a decline in earnings per share before a recovery in later years.
Temu spending raises execution risk
Temu remains a key variable for the investment case. PDD plans to spend RMB 100 billion over three years on its own brands, while management said in August that the rollout was slower than expected. The European Union's duty on low-value parcels adds another cost pressure for the cross-border business.
TIKR said analysts expect third-quarter revenue of about RMB 116 billion, or growth of about 7%, after four consecutive quarterly revenue misses. Online marketing growth and gross margin in the first full quarter under the EU duty will be important indicators for investors.
