- Panasonic's energy unit posted sharply higher second-quarter operating profit as vehicle-battery and data-center storage sales improved.
- The company raised its full-year operating-profit outlook for the energy unit and the group.
- Nessum was approved as the international IEEE 1901-2026 standard, expanding Panasonic's technology positioning in energy management.
Panasonic's energy business delivered the week's main earnings signal on Friday, October 30, as stronger demand for vehicle batteries and data-center energy storage supported a sharp rise in second-quarter operating profit. Reuters reported that the unit's profit reached 55.6 billion yen, compared with 1.2 billion yen a year earlier.
The report said Panasonic raised the energy unit's full-year operating-profit forecast for the fiscal year ending in March 2027 from 171 billion yen to 198 billion yen. The group also lifted its full-year operating-profit outlook by 120 billion yen, or 20 percent, to 710 billion yen, with stronger-than-expected AI-related demand contributing to the upgrade.
Battery Demand Supports Outlook
Higher electric-vehicle battery sales in North America and demand for data-center storage systems supported the energy unit's quarterly performance, according to Reuters. Panasonic said demand from strategic vehicle customers continued to outperform the overall market.
The upgrade broadens the earnings case beyond electric vehicles. Battery storage linked to data centers and AI infrastructure is becoming a second demand driver, while the group outlook also reflects contributions from businesses serving AI-related applications.
Nessum Gains Global Standard
On Monday, October 26, Panasonic announced that Nessum had been approved by the IEEE Standards Association as the international IEEE 1901-2026 standard. The technology supports communications across power lines, control lines, coaxial cables, twisted-pair cables, wireless links and underwater media.
According to Panasonic, Nessum is used in energy-management and infrastructure applications including smart grids, building automation, commercial HVAC systems and industrial equipment. Cumulative shipments of LSI devices incorporating Nessum semiconductor IP cores have exceeded six million units.
