Palo Alto Networks faces a fresh cybersecurity test after Unit 42 said on Thursday, October 29, that attackers were actively exploiting PHP2Shell vulnerabilities against PAN-OS management interfaces exposed to the internet. The company said customers with available patches were not affected, while urging administrators to remove public access and limit management interfaces to trusted internal addresses.

Exploitation raises customer pressure

Unit 42 described PHP2Shell as two critical PHP remote-code-execution vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619. In its update, Palo Alto Networks said Dream Research had identified a campaign that chained PHP2Shell with a Linux kernel privilege-escalation flaw to gain root access. Unit 42 said it independently confirmed the attacker tooling and reported results.

The company said approximately 0.02 percent of its global installed base had internet-facing management interfaces configured and was impacted. It also said the affected customers had been contacted individually. The assessment was published in the Unit 42 threat brief.

Remediation remains the next test

Palo Alto Networks recommends applying the available PAN-OS fixes and checking whether management access is exposed to the public internet. The company said its fixes interrupt the observed exploit chain. For customers, the immediate focus is containment and patch deployment rather than a change to the broader product portfolio.
