- Ottobock led Blue Arbor Technologies' Series A financing for the RESTORE neuromuscular interface system.
- The proceeds are intended to fund feasibility work, U.S. clinical studies and development of an implantable sensing unit.
- RESTORE remains an investigational device, making clinical and regulatory progress the key next milestones.
Ottobock is deepening its strategic position in advanced prosthetic control after Blue Arbor Technologies closed a 10.5 million US-dollar Series A financing round led by Ottobock. The financing announcement, published by Business Wire, said the proceeds will support the RESTORE Neuromuscular Interface System.
Funding targets clinical development
Blue Arbor plans to use the capital to complete feasibility studies and pursue a U.S. Food and Drug Administration Investigational Device Exemption for clinical studies involving the RESTORE external sensing unit. The company will also begin developing a fully implantable internal sensing unit.
RESTORE is designed to enable independent and simultaneous control of a prosthesis's fingers, wrist and elbow. Blue Arbor is developing both an external interface and an implantable version intended to connect signals from a patient's peripheral nervous system with a robotic prosthetic limb.
Technology remains investigational
The announcement said two human implantations had been completed, including a successful second-in-human procedure using the external sensing unit at the Medical University of Vienna. Blue Arbor also said the technology was selected for a University of Michigan clinical study funded by a UG3 grant from the National Institutes of Health. That study will compare surface electrodes with implanted electrodes for prosthetic control.
RESTORE has received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation and entered the agency's Total Product Life Cycle Advisory Program Pilot. These milestones support the development path, but the system remains investigational and is not approved or cleared for commercial distribution. For Ottobock, the financing therefore represents a technology and partnership investment whose commercial contribution depends on clinical evidence, regulatory progress and eventual adoption.
