Ottobock is deepening its strategic exposure to neuromuscular prosthetic control after Blue Arbor Technologies closed a 10.5 million US-dollar Series A financing round on October 29. The round was led by Ottobock and funds feasibility work, U.S. clinical studies and further development of Blue Arbor's RESTORE system, according to BioSpace.
Clinical work moves forward
The financing supports completion of feasibility studies for RESTORE's external sensing unit and preparations for a U.S. Food and Drug Administration Investigational Device Exemption. Blue Arbor will also begin development of a fully implantable internal sensing unit.
RESTORE is designed to enable independent and simultaneous control of a prosthesis' fingers, wrist and elbow. Blue Arbor said two human implantations had been completed, including a second-in-human procedure using the external sensing unit at the Medical University of Vienna.
Regulatory milestones remain preliminary
The system has received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation and entered the agency's Total Product Life Cycle Advisory Program Pilot. Blue Arbor's technology was also selected for a University of Michigan clinical study funded by a UG3 grant from the National Institutes of Health. The study will compare surface electrodes with implanted electrodes for prosthetic control.
These steps strengthen the development path but do not amount to commercial approval. Blue Arbor states that RESTORE remains an investigational device and is not approved or cleared for commercial distribution.
