Nvidia stock faces a sharper China challenge as export controls limit access and domestic rivals expand in AI accelerators. The shift raises pressure on future regional growth.

China Market Share Shifts

  • Nvidia shipped 678,000 AI accelerators in China in the first half of 2026, down 44% from a year earlier.
  • Huawei shipped 572,000 units as domestic alternatives gained ground under export restrictions.
  • IDC expects total Chinese AI-accelerator shipments to grow 19% this year while GPU shipments decline 9%.

Nvidia's position in China's data-centre AI-chip market weakened in the first half of 2026 as export controls restricted supply and Huawei expanded its presence. The Edge Malaysia reported the figures on Tuesday, November 3, citing a Reuters report based on IDC research.

Nvidia shipped 678,000 AI accelerators in mainland China from January through June, down 44% from the same period a year earlier. Its share of the market fell to 34%, while Huawei shipped 572,000 units and reached a 28% share. The six-percentage-point gap leaves Nvidia ahead, but shows how quickly domestic competition has narrowed its lead.

Export Rules Reshape Demand

US restrictions have limited the range of Nvidia products that can be sold in China. Beijing has also promoted domestic alternatives and requires companies to seek approval for compliant Nvidia chips. The figures therefore reflect both supply constraints and a changing competitive landscape, rather than a simple measure of product performance.

IDC said total AI-accelerator shipments in China reached 2.008 million units in the first half. GPU shipments fell 26% to 991,000, while other AI accelerators rose nearly 80% to 1.016 million and overtook GPUs by volume. Huawei, Alibaba's T-Head, Cambricon and Baidu's Kunlunxin together accounted for 95% of the non-GPU segment.

The shift matters because the market is expanding even as Nvidia's access narrows. IDC expects total accelerator shipments in China to grow 19% this year, while GPU shipments are forecast to fall 9%. For Nvidia, that combination raises the risk that lost access to Chinese customers becomes a longer-term market-share problem if local systems gain scale and ecosystem support.

Investor Focus Turns Regional

For investors, China's contribution is an important strategic consideration alongside Nvidia's broader artificial-intelligence demand. The data do not establish a direct share-price reaction, but they highlight a policy-sensitive part of the growth story and increase the importance of product availability, customer approvals and local alternatives.
