- Chinese AI developers have ordered about 6 million RTX Pro 5500 chips from Nvidia and expect to receive only a small fraction in the next four months.
- The reported supply gap highlights strong AI infrastructure demand but also Nvidia's production constraints and exposure to export controls.
- Huawei and other domestic suppliers remain central alternatives as Chinese buyers seek additional inference capacity.
Chinese AI developers are facing a sharp shortfall in Nvidia's RTX Pro 5500 chips, according to a Bloomberg report published by Yahoo Finance on Wednesday, November 4. Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance and other Chinese AI and cloud companies have ordered about 6 million chips, but expect only some tens of thousands over the next four months.
The orders are valued at about 70 billion US dollars at more than 11,000 US dollars per chip. The buyers expect initial deliveries of several thousand units by the end of 2026, followed by tens of thousands around February. Their internal estimates point to roughly 700,000 units by the end of 2027, although final volumes depend on Nvidia's production plans.
Demand Meets Constrained Supply
The RTX Pro 5500 is not covered by the same restrictions as Nvidia's most advanced accelerators, making it one of the strongest options available to Chinese developers. Bloomberg reported that Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company are prioritizing newer products such as Rubin, leaving supply of the RTX Pro 5500 constrained.
Nvidia said US export controls and China's own limits on US imports continue to restrict the company. The supply bottleneck keeps demand strong, but it also gives Huawei, Cambricon and Alibaba's T-Head room to expand as local alternatives.
