Nokia is moving its artificial intelligence radio access network, or AI-RAN, closer to commercial use as operators expand testing beyond laboratory environments. The development adds a new execution milestone to the company's broader focus on AI-driven network infrastructure.

In an October 21 announcement, Nokia said its anyRAN software is being integrated with NVIDIA accelerated computing to apply artificial intelligence within the 5G signal-processing chain. The work covers channel estimation, beamforming, multi-user MIMO pairing and scheduling.

Operator trials set the next milestones

Elisa has run voice, mobile data and video analytics simultaneously on an AI-RAN platform in its 5G network in Helsinki. The companies expect distributed deployment, customer-use-case evaluation and commercial AI-RAN services in 2027.

BT is preparing a live-network trial in Birmingham in 2027. Deutsche Telekom and Nokia are developing AI-based channel estimation, while Orange plans additional laboratory and real-network testing. Nokia said initial laboratory measurements for the Deutsche Telekom work showed typical uplink throughput improvements of 10% to 15%, with field validation planned as the next step.
