The Nikkei 225 closed on October 6 at 70,683.98 points, up 737.12 points or 1.05 percent, as artificial intelligence and semiconductor shares advanced and a firm Japanese government bond auction eased debt-market concerns, according to Jiji Press via Adnkronos.

Drivers of the day

The index finished above 70,000 for the first time since July 1. Overnight gains on Wall Street and lower oil prices supported the opening tone, while buying in AI and chip-related shares strengthened during afternoon trading, Xinhua reported.

The Ministry of Finance auctioned 10-year Japanese government bonds with 7,401.1 billion yen in competitive bids and 1,966.1 billion yen accepted. The average accepted yield was 3.101 percent, according to the Japan Ministry of Finance. The bid-to-cover ratio was 3.76, above the previous sale's 3.29, helping calm concerns over demand for government debt, Bloomberg reported.

Market breadth and leading shares

Advantest rose 3.9 percent and Fujikura gained more than 5 percent as AI infrastructure demand supported technology shares. Real estate, banking and textile stocks also joined the advance. The broader TOPIX rose 0.92 percent to 4,183.56 points, while 1,153 stocks advanced and 349 declined on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, according to News on Japan.

Bank of Japan focus

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said underlying inflation should remain anchored near the central bank's 2 percent target and indicated that the bank remained prepared to adjust borrowing costs as economic and price developments evolve. The comments kept the October 29-30 policy meeting in focus, while the dollar traded near 158.07 yen in Tokyo, News on Japan reported.

In the next Tokyo session on October 7, Japan's August Monthly Labour Survey is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. JST, with total cash earnings forecast at 3.7 percent year over year against 4.7 percent previously. The August business conditions index is due at 2:00 p.m. JST, with the leading index forecast at 118.1 against 117.7 previously, according to Japan Market Report.
