National Grid plans to invest up to GBP 400 million to keep the Interconnexion France-Angleterre (IFA) electricity link between Great Britain and France operating until at least 2050. The company announced the programme on Thursday, October 29, as the interconnector marked 40 years in service, according to Baird Maritime.

Investment targets existing infrastructure

The programme will upgrade technical equipment, buildings and facilities at the interconnector sites. IFA is jointly owned by National Grid and French grid operator RTE, whose contribution to the programme was not disclosed.

The link has a capacity of 2 gigawatts and began operating in 1986. It runs for approximately 70 kilometres between converter stations at Sellindge in Kent and Les Mandarins near Calais, including 45 kilometres of subsea cable.

Rebecca Sedler, president of NGV UK at National Grid, said the link had made payments of nearly GBP 300 million to UK consumers since 2020. She said the investment would help IFA meet the next phase of electricity demand from artificial intelligence and electric vehicles.

Part of a wider spending programme

National Grid includes the IFA work in a broader investment programme of at least GBP 70 billion across the group over the five years to March 2031. The company estimates that IFA has delivered 409 terawatt-hours of cumulative net imports into Great Britain. In 2022, the link also carried electricity to France during outages affecting its nuclear fleet.

The planned work extends an operating asset rather than adding a new cross-Channel cable. That gives National Grid a longer operating horizon for existing capacity, while execution, spending control and the timing of equipment upgrades remain relevant for investors.
