MetLife stock is facing renewed investor attention after the Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved a settlement tied to legacy life insurance policies sold by MetLife agents in Canada. Investment Executive reported that the ruling came on October 27, 2026.

Legacy policies remain the focus

The agreement covers about 70,000 current and former policyholders whose policies were originally sold by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. The national class action concerns policies issued between 1985 and 1998 and was launched in 2010.

Eligible Flexiplus policyholders are to receive compensation for part of past increases in cost-of-insurance charges and administration fees. For current holders, those charges are to be frozen. Certain current and former Universal Plus policyholders with policies issued before 1992 may receive compensation where charges exceeded specified premium limits, while future cost-of-insurance charges are to be capped for qualifying current policyholders.

The case is against Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada, which took over administration of the policies after acquiring Clarica Life Insurance Co. in 2002. Clarica had acquired MetLife's Canadian operations in 1998. Sun Life has denied wrongdoing and previously said it would seek recovery from MetLife if the settlement received approval.

The class action originally concerned approximately 230,000 policies, while the plaintiffs had initially sought CAD 2.5 billion. The court described the approved agreement as fair, reasonable and in the best interests of the class, according to the plaintiffs' lawyers.

Investor relevance stays indirect

The settlement's headline amount is not the same as a disclosed direct cash charge for MetLife. The immediate investor question is how the indemnity arrangement and any eventual recovery claims affect the insurer's exposure to a legacy portfolio, rather than whether the ruling changes the performance of its current operating businesses.
