- MercadoLibre's third-quarter net income reached 448 million US dollars but missed analyst expectations.
- Fulfillment capacity expanded by nearly 20 percent quarter over quarter ahead of the peak shopping season.
- Mercado Pago monthly active users increased 29 percent, while total payment volume rose 53 percent.
MercadoLibre reported strong third-quarter growth on Wednesday, November 4, but profit fell short of analyst expectations as the Latin American commerce and fintech group invested heavily in logistics and customer acquisition. The company said net revenue and financial income rose 45 percent year over year to 10.75 billion US dollars for the quarter ended September 30. Reuters reported that net income of 448 million US dollars missed the 476 million US dollar analyst expectation tracked by LSEG.
The earnings release on Mercado Libre's investor news site showed income from operations of 676 million US dollars and an operating margin of 6.3 percent. The margin declined from nearly 10 percent a year earlier. Revenue growth therefore outpaced operating profit growth, leaving investors to weigh the company's expansion pace against near-term profitability.
Investment Raises Near-Term Costs
Management expanded fulfillment capacity by almost 20 percent from the previous quarter ahead of Black Friday and the holiday shopping period. Reuters quoted Chief Financial Officer Martin de los Santos as saying that capacity spending creates costs before the additional revenue arrives, with the potential for margin recovery as the new infrastructure fills.
Higher free-shipping costs, especially after expansions in Argentina and Brazil, also weighed on profitability. Rising fuel costs led MercadoLibre to raise shipping fees for merchants, while marketing spending increased in Brazil as the company developed its creators and affiliates programs. The company did not provide numerical financial guidance in the reported results, making execution and operating leverage important indicators for the next quarter.
Commerce And Fintech Keep Expanding
Growth remained broad across the ecosystem. Gross merchandise volume reached 23 billion US dollars and increased 33 percent year over year on an FX-neutral basis, while items sold rose 36 percent to 867 million. Commerce revenue reached 6.1 billion US dollars, up 47 percent in dollar terms, according to the company.
Mercado Pago generated 4.6 billion US dollars of revenue, an increase of 42 percent in dollar terms. Total payment volume reached 109 billion US dollars, up 53 percent, and monthly active users rose 29 percent to approximately 93 million. Assets under management increased 67 percent in dollar terms to 25 billion US dollars, supporting the group's longer-term fintech expansion but also keeping credit and funding trends relevant for investors.
