McDonald's stock faces a test on Wednesday, November 4, after third-quarter visits weakened but October promotions brought customers back more effectively. A report published by Placer.ai on Monday said visits fell 4.6 percent year over year in the third quarter, while same-store visits declined 5.1 percent.

Traffic pressure meets promotional momentum

The weakness followed a difficult spring and summer for the quick-service restaurant chain. Placer.ai said visits trailed the prior-year level every month from March through September, with the decline reaching 5.1 percent in May as higher gasoline prices pressured household budgets. The September gap narrowed to 3.5 percent, but demand remained below the 2025 comparison.

October provided a more constructive signal. McDonald's relaunched its MONOPOLY promotion on October 6 and added Disney villain-themed Boo Buckets on October 20. Traffic ran 2.2 percent above the 2026 weekly average during the MONOPOLY launch week, rose to 5.4 percent in the week of October 12 and reached a 7.2 percent lift the following week, according to Placer.ai.

The promotions did not lift visits above the same weeks of 2025, when both campaigns also attracted customers. They did, however, produce McDonald's busiest weeks of 2026 so far. For investors, that contrast points to a business that can still create short-term demand with compelling offers, while underlying consumer pressure remains visible.

What investors will watch next

McDonald's is expected to report its third-quarter results before the U.S. market opens on November 4. The company has signaled that U.S. comparable sales likely slipped in the quarter, making guest counts and the balance between traffic, pricing and product mix central issues for the release.

Management's comments on value offers will also matter. Stronger promotions may support traffic into the holiday period, but repeated discounts could limit the benefit if customers visit more often without generating sufficient restaurant-level profitability. Investors are likely to compare the October improvement with the broader third-quarter trend rather than treat the campaign effect as a full recovery.
