- Asia led the insurer's third-quarter core earnings growth.
- Canadian group insurance claims and lower sales weighed on the domestic business.
- Management has scheduled a results conference call for Thursday morning.
Manulife delivered record core earnings in the third quarter, while weaker market returns and a Vietnam-related charge reduced reported profit. The results were released on Wednesday, November 4, for the period ended September 30, and were covered by Insurance Business.
Core earnings reached CAD 2.1 billion, up 4 percent on a constant-exchange-rate basis from a year earlier. Core earnings per share rose 6 percent to a record CAD 1.24, while core return on equity reached 17.8 percent.
Asia growth offsets Canadian weakness
Asia was the main growth engine, with double-digit core earnings growth supporting the group result. In Canada, core earnings rose 3 percent to CAD 440 million as individual insurance claims improved and Manulife Bank contributed more.
The domestic picture was mixed. Canadian net income fell 54 percent to CAD 205 million, while group insurance claims and lower group benefits sales offset stronger individual insurance performance. New business contractual service margin rose 5 percent.
Reported profit faces market charges
Net income attributable to shareholders declined to CAD 1.4 billion from CAD 1.8 billion a year earlier. The decline reflected weaker returns on alternative long-duration assets, including private equity, real estate and farmland, together with a net charge related to Manulife's Vietnam operations.
Manulife stock traded at EUR 40.86 on Lang & Schwarz at 16:02 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026. That was 1.29 percent above the EUR 40.34 Lang & Schwarz quote in the October 27, 2026, report published by Ad-hoc-news.de.
The real-time quote of Manulife stock remains a reference point as investors assess whether operating growth can offset volatility in reported earnings.
