Lloyds Banking Group reported a sharp rise in third-quarter profit on Thursday, October 29, while keeping its full-year 2026 financial targets unchanged. The Lloyds Banking Group investor release covered the nine months ended September 30.

Profit rises as income expands

Statutory profit before tax reached GBP 2.332 billion in the third quarter, compared with GBP 1.174 billion a year earlier. For the first nine months, profit before tax rose 42 percent to GBP 6.625 billion. Statutory profit after tax increased 46 percent to GBP 4.835 billion, while earnings per share rose to 7.6 pence from 4.8 pence.

Net income increased 9 percent year on year to GBP 14.819 billion in the first nine months. Third-quarter net income reached GBP 5.072 billion, up from GBP 4.643 billion. Underlying profit rose 83 percent in the quarter to GBP 2.367 billion, helped by higher income and much lower remediation costs than in the prior-year period.

Net interest income was GBP 3.806 billion in the third quarter, 10 percent above the year-earlier figure. The banking net interest margin widened to 3.25 percent from 3.06 percent. Nine-month operating costs were broadly stable at GBP 7.246 billion, while the cost:income ratio stood at 49.3 percent.

Management keeps 2026 outlook

Chief Executive Charlie Nunn said the group was delivering sustained financial strength, continued income growth and improving operating leverage. Management reiterated its expectation for underlying net interest income above GBP 14.9 billion in 2026 and return on tangible equity above 16 percent.

The remaining targets also stayed in place: a cost:income ratio below 50 percent, operating costs below GBP 9.9 billion, an asset quality ratio of about 25 basis points and capital generation above 200 basis points. Lloyds plans to reduce its pro forma CET1 ratio from 13.3 percent toward about 13.0 percent by year-end.

Management said net interest income should finish modestly above the GBP 14.9 billion target under current conditions. For 2027 to 2030, the group expects mid-single-digit net income compound annual growth and a cost:income ratio below 45 percent by 2030.

Share price remains tied to margins
