- Lloyds Banking Group lifted nine-month statutory profit before tax by 42% year on year.
- Underlying net interest income rose 10%, while competitive deposit markets continued to pressure margins.
- Management expects 2026 net interest income to exceed GBP 14.9 billion and plans to reach a CET1 ratio of about 13.0% by year-end.
Lloyds Banking Group reported stronger nine-month results on October 29, 2026, while leaving its full-year financial targets unchanged. In its Q3 interim management statement carried by Sharecast, the bank said statutory profit before tax for the nine months ended September 30 reached GBP 6.6 billion, compared with GBP 4.7 billion a year earlier.
Statutory profit after tax rose 46% to GBP 4.8 billion, while earnings per share increased to 7.6 pence from 4.8 pence. The comparison benefited in part from a lower remediation charge: Lloyds recorded GBP 61 million in the first nine months, versus GBP 912 million in the prior-year period, which included a large charge related to motor finance commission arrangements.
Income growth offsets cost pressure
Underlying profit increased 36% to GBP 6.6 billion in the first nine months. Underlying net interest income rose 10% to GBP 11.1 billion, supported by stronger structural hedge income and lending growth. Underlying other income also increased 10% to GBP 5.0 billion, reflecting broader customer activity, strategic investments and the addition of Lloyds Wealth.
Net income rose 9% to GBP 14.8 billion. Operating costs increased 1% to GBP 7.2 billion, keeping the nine-month cost-to-income ratio at 49.3%, down from 59.7% a year earlier. The third-quarter ratio was 47.2%. The bank's underlying impairment charge rose to GBP 930 million, producing an asset quality ratio of 25 basis points as credit performance remained stable but provision releases normalised.
Competitive pricing remains a central issue for investors. The banking net interest margin reached 3.21% for the first nine months, up from 3.04%, but asset margin compression and competition for deposits partly offset the benefit of higher hedge income. Customer deposits increased 1% to GBP 502.8 billion, with commercial banking growth offsetting a decline in retail deposits caused largely by disciplined pricing.
Guidance holds as 2027 slows
Management maintained its 2026 guidance for underlying net interest income above GBP 14.9 billion, a cost-to-income ratio below 50%, operating costs below GBP 9.9 billion, an asset quality ratio of about 25 basis points, return on tangible equity above 16% and capital generation above 200 basis points. The group expects its CET1 ratio to move down to about 13.0% by the end of the year after capital distributions.
Lloyds said current market conditions imply that 2026 net interest income will be modestly above GBP 14.9 billion. The same competitive conditions are expected to weigh on the pace of net interest income growth in 2027, partly offsetting benefits from higher volumes and hedge income. That outlook places greater importance on lending growth, deposit pricing and operating discipline as the bank begins executing its Accelerate 2030 strategy.
The bank also said the Upper Tribunal hearing concerning challenges to motor finance redress schemes is listed for the second half of February 2027. Lloyds reported no further charges related to the arrangements in the nine-month period and said its existing provision remains its current best estimate.

For investors, the earnings profile is supported by higher income, improving cost efficiency and solid capital generation, while deposit competition and the slower expected 2027 margin trajectory remain important risks. The next scheduled reporting milestone is Lloyds' 2026 preliminary results on January 28, 2027.
