- Chairman Ernst Tanner said Lindt misjudged consumer tolerance for price increases, especially in Germany.
- The company has already reduced selected prices to rebuild volumes and expects stronger growth in the Americas and Far East.
- The next scheduled sales update on January 19, 2027, will test whether pricing changes restore demand.
Lindt & Sprüngli is recalibrating its pricing strategy after Chairman Ernst Tanner said the Swiss chocolate maker overestimated how much consumers would accept higher prices. The comments followed the group's October 19 CEO change and recent reductions to its 2026 sales outlook.
The Economic Times reported on October 26 that Tanner blamed the weakness largely on a misread of the German market. He said cocoa costs had risen sharply from 2024 and Lindt had passed on those costs too aggressively, making products too expensive for some consumers.
Price cuts target lost volume
Tanner said Lindt had already reduced some prices to lift sales volumes and could have more flexibility if cocoa prices return to more normal levels. He also rejected group-wide job cuts and said the company still expects 6% to 8% growth in the Americas and Far East in 2026.
The strategy creates a trade-off for investors: lower prices may help recover demand and market share, but they can also limit the benefit of earlier price increases. Europe remains the key test because weaker volume there has exposed the limits of passing higher cocoa costs directly to consumers.
