Lam Research stock faces test from memory-chip demand

- Memory makers accounted for nearly half of Lam's systems revenue in the September quarter.
- Aether tools are entering high-volume HBM production, supporting Lam's advanced-packaging opportunity.
- Supply constraints and lower China revenue remain key risks for the December quarter.
Lam Research is facing a split investor picture: memory-chip customers are spending heavily, while supply constraints and China exposure are limiting the near-term outlook. In an analysis published Thursday, November 5, Trefis examined whether the market is overlooking the strength of Lam's memory business after the recent share-price decline.
According to Trefis, memory makers generated 46 percent of Lam's systems revenue in the September quarter, matching the June quarter's share. Memory revenue nevertheless reached a record and increased 120 percent from a year earlier, while Lam's total quarterly revenue rose 54.4 percent year over year to USD 8.22 billion.
Memory demand supports equipment growth
The customer mix gives Lam exposure to the buildout of high-bandwidth memory and other advanced chips. Management said on its October 21 earnings call that Aether tools were already ramping in high-volume HBM manufacturing, with additional opportunities at DRAM and foundry-logic customers. Lam now expects cumulative Aether revenue of USD 2.5 billion by the end of the decade, USD 1 billion above its earlier expectation, Trefis reported.
Lam's preliminary industry outlook also points to strong demand. Management expects global spending on chipmaking equipment to exceed USD 200 billion in calendar 2027, with DRAM spending growing fastest, followed by foundry logic and NAND. Higher etch and deposition intensity could provide an additional lift if chipmakers move directly toward 3D DRAM designs.
That outlook remains a forecast rather than a reported result. Management also expects clean-room capacity and component availability to prevent customers and equipment suppliers from fully meeting demand in 2027. The supply issue is already affecting the next quarter: Lam guided to December-quarter revenue of USD 8.6 billion, plus or minus USD 400 million, and said the projection would have been higher without near-term supply constraints.
China and execution remain risks
The memory opportunity is not uniform. DRAM represented 20 percent of Lam's systems revenue in the September quarter, down from 23 percent in June, even though dollar sales reached a record. Management also expects China's share of revenue to decline meaningfully in the December quarter as domestic-customer sales weaken.
Lam Research stock traded at EUR 188.37 on Lang & Schwarz at 13:50 CET on Thursday, November 5. Investors will therefore focus on whether memory spending can offset near-term delivery limits and the China slowdown. The next major operating checkpoint is Lam's report expected in January 2027, when memory sales and the supply situation should provide a clearer test of the 2027 growth case.
