Johnson & Johnson stock gains a fresh MedTech focus from Impella findings presented at TCT 2026. Further trial evidence is expected in 2027.

Impella Results Add MedTech Focus

  • Three clinical analyses presented at TCT covered outcomes for patients undergoing high-risk coronary interventions.
  • Johnson & Johnson said its cardiovascular platform remains focused on patient selection, timing and post-procedure care.
  • The randomized PROTECT IV trial is expected to provide further evidence in 2027.

Johnson & Johnson presented new Impella findings at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics symposium in San Diego on Sunday, November 1, according to a Johnson & Johnson press release. The company said three analyses covering 1,379 patients produced favorable survival and patient-outcome figures for Impella-supported high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention.

The findings give investors a new readout on the cardiovascular portfolio acquired through Abiomed. Johnson & Johnson said the analyses highlight the importance of patient selection, timely device support and post-procedure management rather than the device alone.

Registry Results Highlight Patient Selection

The TRI-GUARD-PCI registry covered 279 patients who underwent elective protected coronary intervention at hospitals in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. All-cause mortality was 6.1 percent at 30 days and 7.9 percent at 180 days, below the mortality rates shown in the CHIP-BCIS3 study comparison cited by the company.

A separate U.S. registry analysis of 522 patients reported cardiovascular mortality of 3.4 percent at discharge. The estimated cardiovascular mortality rates were 4.7 percent after 30 days and 6.5 percent after 90 days. Johnson & Johnson said these figures were lower than the corresponding CHIP-BCIS3 rates, while also noting differences in treatment protocols and post-procedure support.

A third analysis examined 578 Impella-supported patients from the PROTECT III study who matched the entry criteria of CHIP-BCIS3. In-hospital all-cause mortality was 4.7 percent, compared with an estimated rate of about 8 percent in the earlier study. The comparisons come from separate studies and do not represent a randomized head-to-head trial.

Next Evidence Point Comes In 2027

Johnson & Johnson said the PROTECT IV randomized controlled trial is expected to deliver results in 2027. The study is intended to add randomized evidence on Impella-supported high-risk coronary procedures, giving investors a later milestone beyond the observational registry findings presented at TCT.
