ING Groep reported stronger commercial momentum for the third quarter on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The Dutch bank posted a net result of 1.85 billion euros, up 3.5% from a year earlier, while return on tangible equity reached 16.3%. ING also announced a further shareholder distribution of up to 1.9 billion euros. The figures and management comments were published in the ING 3Q2026 press release.

Customer expansion remained a central driver. ING added 259,000 mobile primary customers during the quarter, with Germany, the Netherlands and Romania making strong contributions. The bank said the total number of customers rose by 900,000 over the past 12 months to more than 41 million, while mobile primary customers increased by more than 1.1 million over the same period.

Customer balances support income growth

Net core lending grew by 11.0 billion euros and net core deposits by 12.1 billion euros in the quarter. Retail Banking contributed 8.5 billion euros of lending growth, including a 6.9 billion euro increase in the mortgage portfolio. Wholesale Banking lending rose by 2.5 billion euros, while its deposits increased by 9.4 billion euros.

Fee income climbed 9.3% year over year to 1.273 billion euros. ING linked the increase to customer growth and higher engagement across its retail and wholesale businesses. Assets under management and e-brokerage rose by 6.7 billion euros during the quarter to 328 billion euros, an increase of 22% from a year earlier.

Capital generation gave management room to accelerate shareholder returns. ING's CET1 ratio stood at 13.3% at the end of the quarter, and two significant risk-transfer transactions generated 3.0 billion euros of risk-weighted-asset relief. The new distribution consists of a share buyback of up to 1.65 billion euros, which began on October 29, and a 250 million euro cash payment scheduled for January 14, 2027. ING said the distribution is funded from results reserved outside CET1 capital.

Wholesale banking simplification ahead

Management is also refocusing and simplifying Wholesale Banking. The strategic adjustment is intended to serve clients more efficiently while supporting the bank's capital and cost priorities. ING said it remains on track to deliver its 2026 outlook and enters the remainder of the year with continued customer growth and business momentum.
