Infineon stock is in focus after the company outlined a major Villach expansion for gallium nitride power chips. Production is planned by end-2027.

GaN expansion strengthens Villach role

  • Infineon plans high-volume gallium nitride production on 300-millimeter wafers by the end of 2027.
  • The larger wafer format can produce 2.3 times as many chips as 200-millimeter wafers.
  • Demand is linked to AI data centers, energy infrastructure, electric mobility and robotics.

Infineon Technologies announced on October 27 that it will establish a high-volume manufacturing facility for gallium nitride power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers in Villach, Austria. The company plans to invest around EUR 1.1 billion in existing cleanroom facilities by 2034, according to its Infineon press release.

Villach targets high-volume GaN

Production is scheduled to start by the end of 2027, with the ramp-up aligned with market demand. Infineon said the expansion will use existing and upgraded infrastructure, allowing the company to increase capacity without building an entirely new site.

The project is designed to supply power semiconductors for artificial intelligence data centers, energy infrastructure, electric vehicles, robotics and consumer electronics. Gallium nitride can switch and convert electricity more efficiently than conventional silicon, supporting smaller systems, lower energy losses and reduced heat generation.

Infineon said 300-millimeter wafer production can yield 2.3 times as many chips per wafer as 200-millimeter production. The company is transferring technology it first demonstrated on 300-millimeter GaN wafers two years ago into customer-facing volume manufacturing.

European funding supports capacity buildout

The European Commission approved EUR 319 million in state aid under the European Chips Act. Formal funding from Austria's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism was still expected to follow the Commission decision. Infineon said the investment will strengthen Villach as a global competence center for power electronics and new semiconductor materials.

Infineon Austria employs around 5,800 people, including approximately 4,800 at the Villach site, based on figures for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2025. The company expects the new facility to create synergies with its existing power electronics research and development activities.

The real-time quote of Infineon stock showed the stock trading at EUR 50.84 on Lang & Schwarz at 10:00 CET on Monday, November 2, 2026, 0.55 percent above the Xetra close of Friday, October 30.

Demand outlook remains the key test

Infineon's investment is aimed at markets where power efficiency is becoming more important as computing and electrification expand. The company cited analyst expectations for the GaN power semiconductor market to reach USD 3.5 billion by 2031, implying annual growth of around 35 percent from 2025 to 2031.

For investors, the expansion adds a long-term capacity and technology narrative to Infineon's existing semiconductor portfolio. The scale of the investment also makes execution, customer adoption and the timing of the production ramp important factors for future returns. The planned use of existing cleanrooms may limit the cost and construction burden compared with a new site, but the program extends through 2034.

Germany's DAX index provides the broader market backdrop for Infineon's Frankfurt-listed shares.
