Indra is taking a coordinating role in a new Spanish defense technology alliance focused on underwater infrastructure. The company and six partners signed a memorandum of understanding on November 4 at the Euronaval naval trade fair in Paris to develop SIPRIS, according to an Indra Group announcement.
The project is designed to combine information from the sea surface to the seabed in a shared surveillance picture. Its intended use is the persistent monitoring and protection of underwater infrastructure, including the detection of threats and unusual activity. The agreement creates a development framework rather than announcing an already deployed system.
Indra takes the integration lead
Indra will coordinate the industrial ecosystem, define the system architecture and act as the global integrator. Its contribution will center on SEADEF, the company's naval mission-systems family, and IndraMind, its sovereign artificial-intelligence platform. Indra will also provide unmanned aerial systems and communications-management capabilities.
The six partners add specialized technologies. SAES will develop underwater acoustic sensors and sonar-processing capabilities for detecting and classifying threats. UTEK will work on autonomous surface vehicles, while Iqua Robotics will develop autonomous underwater vehicles for infrastructure inspection and automated anomaly detection.
Aragon Photonics will contribute distributed acoustic sensing through fiber-optic networks, allowing acoustic events to be detected across underwater communications infrastructure over distances of tens of kilometers. FYLA will provide underwater optical communications, and Sateliot will contribute satellite communications and information systems to extend coverage and support distributed operations.
Development still precedes commercialization
The partners describe SIPRIS as an open initiative that can add companies, technology centers and other industrial participants. The next development steps include operational demonstrations, joint integration work and validation activities before any future market launch. The announcement did not disclose a contract value or revenue contribution for Indra.
For investors, the alliance gives Indra another defense-related technology angle and broadens the potential application of its naval systems and artificial-intelligence platform. The commercial impact remains dependent on subsequent development, customer adoption and procurement decisions rather than on the MoU itself.
