Imperial Oil reported a record third-quarter net income of 2.454 billion Canadian dollars on October 30, as higher commodity prices and stronger downstream volumes offset lower production and refinery throughput. The company said its cash balance reached 2.9 billion Canadian dollars while it funded capital spending, dividends and accelerated share repurchases.

Imperial Oil stock traded at 120.98 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 12:20 CET on Monday, November 2, 2026. The latest quote is available through the real-time quote of Imperial Oil stock.

Downstream strength drives quarterly result

Imperial's net income rose from 539 million Canadian dollars in the third quarter of 2025. Diluted earnings per share increased to 5.11 Canadian dollars from 1.07 Canadian dollars. The prior-year quarter included 555 million Canadian dollars of after-tax impairment and restructuring charges, while the 2026 quarter contained no identified items.

Total revenues and other income reached 16.205 billion Canadian dollars, compared with 12.049 billion Canadian dollars a year earlier. Operating cash flow increased to 3.228 billion Canadian dollars from 1.798 billion Canadian dollars, and free cash flow reached 2.566 billion Canadian dollars versus 1.316 billion Canadian dollars.

Downstream earnings climbed to 1.555 billion Canadian dollars from 444 million Canadian dollars, supported by improved industry refining margins and a favorable product mix linked mainly to renewable diesel. Chemical earnings rose to 52 million Canadian dollars from 21 million Canadian dollars. Upstream earnings increased to 941 million Canadian dollars from 728 million Canadian dollars, although lower volumes and higher operating costs limited the benefit from stronger realizations.

Production faces operational constraints

Gross oil-equivalent production averaged 418,000 barrels per day, down from 462,000 barrels per day in the year-earlier quarter. Kearl production fell to 282,000 gross barrels per day, including 200,000 barrels per day attributable to Imperial, after a third-party pipeline outage forced a full shutdown for multiple days. Planned turnaround work also weighed on Cold Lake and Syncrude.

Imperial lowered its 2026 Kearl target to 280,000 gross barrels per day, or 199,000 barrels per day attributable to the company. Refinery throughput declined to 381,000 barrels per day from 425,000 barrels per day, and utilization fell to 88 percent from 98 percent because of unplanned downtime, the pipeline outage and planned work at the Sarnia refinery. Petroleum product sales nevertheless increased to 474,000 barrels per day, helped by higher exports.

Shareholder returns remain central

Imperial returned 2.506 billion Canadian dollars to shareholders in the quarter, including 420 million Canadian dollars in dividends and 2.086 billion Canadian dollars in share repurchases. Management expects to repurchase all remaining allowable shares under its normal course issuer bid before year-end and said it is positioned to return additional surplus cash in the new year. The company declared a fourth-quarter dividend of 0.87 Canadian dollars per share.

Chief Executive Officer John Whelan said the integrated business model continued to deliver strong results across all operating segments. Imperial also said debottlenecking work on rail logistics at the Strathcona refinery is progressing and should support higher crude runs and renewable diesel throughput by year-end.

Market conditions remain relevant for the integrated producer because crude prices, heavy-oil differentials and refining margins can materially change quarterly earnings. The S&P/TSX Composite provides the broader Canadian market context.

Further operating performance will depend on the recovery from pipeline and turnaround disruptions, commodity prices and the pace of shareholder distributions. Imperial's next quarterly report will provide the next detailed update on production, refinery utilization and capital allocation.
