IBM introduced new controls for enterprise AI agents at TechXchange 2026 on Tuesday, October 27. The company presented capabilities designed to give organizations clearer oversight of which agents operate in their systems, what they can access and how their actions are tracked. IBM stock traded at 230.70 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:10 CET on Friday, October 30, 1.32 percent above the Xetra close of Thursday, October 29.

The announcement was made in an IBM Newsroom release. IBM said the offering combines agent discovery, verified identities, access controls and performance evaluation across existing applications and infrastructure.

Identity and access form the core

IBM is extending its security architecture with Agent Identity and HashiCorp Vault. Agent Identity records an agent's owner, lifecycle status and delegated authority, while Vault provides short-lived credentials and least-privilege access to business systems. IBM said access can be denied and a session revoked in real time when an agent attempts an unauthorized action.

IBM also outlined new watsonx Orchestrate capabilities. The platform's Discover function, in tech preview, is designed to find agents, models and Model Context Protocol servers across Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry and Google Gemini. Contain, also in tech preview, places agents in isolated sandboxes and includes a kill switch. Evaluate lets teams test quality, accuracy and compliance before deployment and monitor agents in production.

The company cited Gartner research saying that the average Fortune 500 enterprise could use more than 150,000 AI agents by 2028, while only 13 percent of organizations believe they have adequate governance. IBM's product strategy therefore addresses a growing management and security requirement rather than adding another general-purpose model to its portfolio.

For IBM, the announcement strengthens the hybrid-cloud and AI software narrative. Revenue impact was not disclosed in the release, so the near-term financial contribution remains dependent on customer adoption and the conversion of preview capabilities into broader deployments. Availability varies: Vault 2.2, Agent Identity and watsonx Orchestrate's Evaluate capability are generally available, while Discover and Contain remain in tech preview.
