Hugo Boss lowered its full-year 2026 outlook after a difficult third quarter, citing softer consumer demand and higher non-cash depreciation and amortization expenses for IT assets. The German fashion group also said demand is likely to remain volatile in the fourth quarter. The company presented the update ahead of its full third-quarter results release on Tuesday, November 3.

According to the HUGO BOSS announcement, currency-adjusted group sales are now expected to decline in the high single-digit percentage range. The previous forecast called for a decline in the mid- to high-single-digit range. EBIT is now expected to range between EUR 250 million and EUR 300 million, compared with the earlier range of EUR 300 million to EUR 350 million.

Third-quarter margin improves

Currency-adjusted group sales declined 5 percent in the third quarter. Revenue in group currency fell 4 percent to EUR 946 million from EUR 989 million a year earlier. Hugo Boss attributed the performance to its ongoing CLAIM 5 TOUCHDOWN strategic realignment and subdued consumer demand across key markets.

Gross margin rose 220 basis points to 63.3 percent, supported by sourcing efficiencies and pricing measures. The improvement did not offset higher operating expenses, however. EBIT fell to EUR 81 million from EUR 95 million in the prior-year quarter, while the EBIT margin declined to 8.6 percent from 9.6 percent.

Free cash flow before leases increased to EUR 155 million, helped by a 14 percent year-over-year reduction in inventories. The company said free cash flow for the full year would remain below its original expectation.

Higher technology costs weigh

Hugo Boss said the revised profit outlook reflects both weaker demand assumptions for the final quarter and higher non-cash depreciation and amortization for IT assets as artificial intelligence and other technologies develop rapidly. Capital expenditure is now expected to range between 4 percent and 5 percent of group sales, including the acquisition of a logistics property that the company had previously leased.

Trade net working capital is expected to reach around 21 percent of group sales, compared with around 20 percent previously. The change reflects lower trade payables following adjustments to supplier payment terms.

Chief Executive Daniel Grieder said the company had made further progress in gross margin and operating efficiency, while acknowledging that the full benefits of the strategy would take time to materialize. Management kept its long-term strategic direction unchanged and said CLAIM 5 TOUCHDOWN remains focused on building a more resilient and profitable business.
