Hewlett Packard Enterprise stock is in focus after HPE outlined a lunar AI mission. NASA and Deloitte will add workloads to the test.

Lunar computing expands HPE's AI platform

  • HPE plans to send Spaceborne Computer-4 to the Moon aboard Astrolab's FLIP rover later in 2026.
  • NASA and Deloitte are preparing separate AI and cybersecurity workloads for the mission.
  • Local processing could help future lunar systems analyze sensor data without sending all information to Earth.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise said on October 20, 2026, that its Spaceborne Computer-4 is planned to run artificial intelligence and high-performance computing tests on the Moon. The company described the announcement in its HPE newsroom release.

The mission is intended for late 2026 under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. Voyager Technologies' Griffin-1 lander is planned to deliver Astrolab's FLIP rover near the lunar South Pole, with HPE's compute module among the payloads.

AI workloads move to the lunar edge

HPE said Spaceborne Computer-4 is scheduled to run large language model applications, visual-data analysis and LiDAR processing. The planned workloads cover mapping, navigation, terrain analysis and autonomous monitoring. HPE also plans to test high-performance LINPACK and high-performance conjugate gradient benchmarks, which it describes as the first such HPC benchmarks planned for the lunar surface.

The module combines a low-power central processing unit with a graphics processing unit and flash storage in solid-state drives supplied by KIOXIA. HPE said the lightweight, fanless design is intended to withstand the lunar environment, while software will manage the interaction between the rover and Earth-based resources.

Local computing is central to the mission's commercial case. Processing images, LiDAR readings and other information near the point of collection could reduce the amount of raw material sent back to Earth and shorten the path from measurement to insight. The mission remains a technology demonstration, so its operational performance will depend on the launch, landing and conditions on the lunar surface.

NASA and Deloitte add workloads

NASA plans to use the module for the Federated Learning Using In-space Data experiment. HPE said the test will coordinate neural-network models trained on data associated with Earth, the Moon and the International Space Station. NASA also plans a tuned language-model test for searching and interpreting documents stored onboard.

Deloitte is set to contribute Silent Shield, which HPE described as a system for detecting cyber intrusions and identifying anomalies through near-real-time predictive analytics. HPE will also support Astrolab's mission control in Hawthorne, California, with HPE Private Cloud and CloudOps software for workload management and automation.
