Hermès International stock weighs delayed luxury recovery outlook

- Weak Chinese demand, higher interest rates and fading pricing power continue to weigh on European luxury valuations.
- Analysts expect spending to concentrate among top-tier customers while middle-income demand weakens.
- Hermès retains a premium valuation, but that premium has narrowed sharply as investors reassess growth prospects.
Hermès International stock traded at EUR 1,337.50 on Lang & Schwarz at 12:12 CET on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, 2.10 percent above the Xetra close of Tuesday, November 3, at EUR 1,310.00. The move came as investors assessed a broader luxury-sector reset rather than a new company announcement.
An October analysis hosted by the International Association of Department Stores and attributed to Bloomberg said European luxury shares had fallen about 40 percent in 2026. The report said weak Chinese demand, higher interest rates and fading pricing power had delayed hopes for a sector recovery.
Valuation premium under pressure
The analysis placed Hermès among the luxury groups trading near their lowest valuations in 12 years. It said the company's premium to the sector had narrowed from 100 percent to 22 percent over 18 months, highlighting how a slower growth outlook can affect even the industry's strongest brands.
The sector backdrop remains uneven. The MSCI Europe Textiles Apparel and Luxury Goods index was down 25 percent in 2026 and almost 40 percent from its record high, according to the analysis. Price increases across the industry are also expected to be the lowest since 2019, limiting a key source of sales and margin support.
Affluent customers drive demand
Analysts cited in the report expect luxury demand to concentrate further among top-tier clients while middle-income spending weakens. That shift favors brands with strong customer relationships and scarce products, but it also raises the importance of retaining the highest-spending clientele as broader demand cools.
Views on the downturn remain divided. UBS considers the weakness cyclical and favors Richemont and Watches of Switzerland, while Morgan Stanley sees limited room for multiple expansion over the next 12 months. Berenberg describes China's difficulties as structural, whereas Goldman Sachs sees 2027 as a potential turning point for mid-single-digit organic growth.
For Hermès, the debate centers on whether its brand strength and supply discipline can preserve pricing power through a prolonged luxury slowdown. The narrowing valuation premium means investors may require clearer evidence of renewed growth before the shares regain their former relative standing.
For the broader CAC 40, luxury-sector weakness remains an important consideration as investors balance selective consumer resilience against higher rates and softer international demand.
