General Motors is recalling more than 67,000 electric vehicles after a software glitch was linked to a temporary loss of braking at low speeds. The Detroit News reported the action on Thursday, November 5, citing a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report and information from the automaker.

The recall covers Cadillac LYRIQ vehicles from model years 2023 through 2027, 2025 and 2026 Cadillac CELESTIQ vehicles, 2026 and 2027 Cadillac VISTIQ vehicles, and Chevrolet Blazer EVs from model years 2024 through 2027. The affected software tracks wheel movement to help prevent slipping but can misinterpret that movement in a specific low-speed driving situation.

Software Issue Triggers Vehicle Recall

According to the safety report cited by The Detroit News, the problem can arise when the brakes are lightly applied during a sharp turn and the vehicle encounters a bump or depression. The software may then release and reapply the brakes, creating a temporary loss of braking. The brakes function normally when pressed a second time, the report said.

Federal safety officials cited 20 minor accidents that may be connected to the defect, including two with minor injuries. A GM technical expert raised the issue in April after reviewing an incident involving a 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ that struck a garage at low speed. GM opened an internal investigation in August and issued a voluntary recall late last month.

GM Starts Over-The-Air Remedy

GM spokesperson Bill Grotz said the issue can be fixed through a free over-the-air software update, which the company has started delivering. Dealers also have access to the required software. The company said customer safety and satisfaction remain priorities while it works to remedy the issue.

The recall adds a near-term execution task for GM as the automaker expands its electric-vehicle range. It also puts software controls and post-sale quality processes in focus for investors, although the report does not establish a financial impact from the campaign.
