GE Aerospace has reached a technology milestone in hybrid-electric aviation. In flight tests over Plattsburgh, New York, in May 2026, a modified Saab 340B completed what the company described as the world's first high-altitude hybrid-electric flight, reaching above 30,000 feet. GE Aerospace detailed the achievement in its October 27 report.
Technology Moves Beyond Ground Tests
The flight formed part of NASA's Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration program, conducted with BETA Technologies and Boeing. The Saab 340B paired a megawatt-class electric powertrain with a traditional gas turbine, allowing the system to draw power from the batteries and recharge them during flight.
The aircraft flew for more than two hours during the test campaign. GE Aerospace said the flight system included motor-generators, power converters, inverters, controllers, gearboxes, propellers, heat exchangers and a CT7 turboprop engine. BAE Systems supplied the batteries, while Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences supplied the nacelle for the test installation.
The program builds on earlier ground work. GE Aerospace said megawatt-class ground tests in Ohio simulated taxi, takeoff, climb and cruise phases and produced higher power output and voltage than competing hybrid-electric offerings. The company is now working toward scaling the technology across engine architectures, including concepts linked to CFM International's RISE technology demonstration program.
Long-Term Commercial Potential
GE Aerospace President and CEO of Commercial Engines & Services Mohamed Ali called the flight a meaningful step toward next-generation engines. Hybrid-electric propulsion remains a development program rather than a commercial engine product, so the immediate investment relevance lies in technical validation and future product options rather than near-term revenue.
