The companys latest quarterly report showed operating income more than doubled year over year, while collectibles became a larger part of the business.
Operating income more than doubles
According to GameStop in its September 8, 2026 release, operating income reached USD 160.2 million in the 13 weeks ended August 1, 2026, compared with USD 66.4 million in the prior year period. That represents a gain of 141.27 percent and lifted the operating margin to 20.27 percent from 6.83 percent.
Net sales moved in the opposite direction, falling to USD 790.2 million from USD 972.2 million. The company attributed the decline to the prior years Nintendo Switch 2 launch, planned store closures and the divestiture of its France operations, making the earnings improvement more dependent on cost control and product mix.
Collectibles lead the mix shift
Collectibles net sales rose 57.00 percent year over year to USD 356.3 million in Q2 2026, from USD 227.6 million. Their share of sales increased to 45.10 percent from 23.40 percent, while video game sales fell to USD 263.2 million from USD 494.6 million, according to GameStop.
The mix matters because gross margin reached 43.60 percent in the quarter, compared with 29.12 percent a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA also increased to USD 174.0 million from USD 75.7 million, a rise of 129.72 percent on the companys adjusted measure.
Guidance moves above USD 650 million
GameStop raised its fiscal 2026 adjusted EBITDA outlook to more than USD 650.0 million from more than USD 600.0 million previously, per GameStop. Adjusted EBITDA for the first six months of fiscal 2026 was USD 339.7 million, leaving the company with a measurable second-half target.
The balance sheet also carries a major investment position. As of August 1, 2026, GameStop held USD 4.9 billion of eBay common stock and total cash, securities, digital assets and related receivables of USD 5.4 billion. Those assets support the valuation story, but operating sales in the core video game category remain the counterweight.
GameStop stock stays below its yearly high
