Fugro stock faces margin pressure after weak Q3 update

- Third-quarter revenue grew modestly, but lower marine pricing and exceptional costs reduced profitability.
- Fugro kept its full-year 2026 outlook unchanged as customer caution and excess capacity weigh on the fourth quarter.
- Management expects offshore wind site-characterisation markets to recover from the second half of 2027.
Fugro's third-quarter trading update on Friday, October 30, showed resilient revenue but sharper pressure on profitability. In its Q3 2026 trading update, the company said comparable revenue rose 2.2% to EUR 525.2 million, while adjusted EBITDA fell to EUR 75.9 million from EUR 108.6 million a year earlier.
Lower pricing weighs on margins
Fugro attributed the earnings pressure to lower pricing in marine site characterisation, industry overcapacity and additional costs linked to the war in the Middle East. One-off charter expenses on two inspection and monitoring campaigns in Australia also affected the quarter.
The adjusted EBITDA margin narrowed to 14.4% from 21.5%, while adjusted EBIT declined to EUR 27.2 million from EUR 64.9 million. Free cash flow reached EUR 2.6 million, compared with EUR 25.6 million in the third quarter of 2025.
Backlog signals weaker demand
The backlog for the next 12 months fell 8.5% on a comparable basis, with offshore wind accounting for a 36% decline. Growth in oil and gas and infrastructure helped offset weaker offshore wind activity, as Fugro redeployed capacity toward markets with steadier demand.
Management left its full-year 2026 outlook unchanged. Customer caution, industry overcapacity and a seasonally slower fourth quarter are expected to continue weighing on margins. Fugro plans to limit full-year capital expenditure to around EUR 150 million and said its EUR 50 million annualised cost-reduction programme remains on track.
Recovery pushed into 2027
Fugro expects offshore wind site-characterisation markets to start recovering from the second half of 2027. The company said tendering activity and recent auctions are supportive, but firm awards have not yet restored the segment's backlog.
