Evonik balances earnings and strategy

  • Management expects full-year adjusted EBITDA in the upper half of its existing range.
  • The board continues to reject formal BASF negotiations while allowing a confidential information exchange.

Evonik entered the weekend with a stronger operating outlook after its third-quarter update on Tuesday, November 3. The company said adjusted EBITDA rose 40 percent year on year to 629 million euros and indicated that full-year earnings should land in the upper half of its 2.0 billion to 2.2 billion euro range.

The real-time quote of Evonik stock stood at 21.45 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:55 CET on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

Operating recovery meets restructuring burden

Industrylinqs reported on November 4 that third-quarter sales increased 13 percent to about 3.8 billion euros, while higher selling prices and volumes supported the operating result. The publication also reported that Evonik expects fourth-quarter earnings to exceed the prior-year level, although seasonal pressure, higher raw-material and energy costs, and lower methionine prices could weigh on the final quarter.

The earnings improvement did not translate into a positive bottom line. Evonik recorded a net loss of 53 million euros, compared with a loss of 106 million euros a year earlier. Restructuring costs of 313 million euros related to the second phase of the Evonik Tailor Made program weighed on net income. The program is expected to eliminate about 3,200 jobs between 2027 and 2029.

BASF talks remain a strategic risk

Evonik is also navigating continued takeover interest from BASF. According to Industrylinqs, interim Chief Executive Claus Rettig said the board remains focused on developing Evonik as an independent company and will not enter formal negotiations based on the information received so far. The group remains willing to hold a confidential, information-only exchange with BASF.

For investors, the situation leaves two competing themes in focus: improving operational momentum and the execution risk attached to the restructuring program, alongside uncertainty over a potential strategic combination. Management also targets a return on capital employed above 8 percent for 2026 and aims to lift that measure to 11 percent by 2029.

The DAX provides the broader German market backdrop for investors.
