- Ericsson has launched a system that uses mobile-network infrastructure to detect and track drones and other moving objects.
- The commercial opportunity remains prospective, with broader deployments expected after initial customer pilots.
- The technology targets defense, public safety, critical infrastructure, transport and industrial applications.
Ericsson is adding a new technology angle to its network portfolio with the launch of an Integrated Sensing and Communication system for detecting and tracking drones. The company announced the Ericsson ISAC System on November 2, 2026, in a Ericsson press release.
The system adds sensing capabilities to 5G infrastructure so operators can detect and track moving objects, including drones that are not connected to the network. Ericsson says it combines sensing-capable radios with edge computing, artificial intelligence and signal processing, while using towers, backhaul and spectrum already deployed across cities, transport corridors and strategic locations.
Commercial path starts with pilots
Ericsson plans a phased commercial introduction. Selected customers are expected to begin small-scale, sensing-only pilots in 2027, followed by broader sensing deployments from 2028. The integrated communications capability is intended to develop as the technology moves toward 6G.
The system operates as a multi-static network: geographically separate sites transmit and receive sensing signals, allowing several viewpoints of the same object. Ericsson says validated tests detected and tracked micro drones at kilometer-scale distances with precise three-dimensional positioning, although performance depends on the target, flight profile, terrain, sensing geometry and system configuration.
The initial target markets are defense, public safety and critical infrastructure. Potential uses also include transport, industrial operations, drone traffic management and urban airspace monitoring. Ericsson presents ISAC as a complement to radar and other sensors rather than a replacement, leaving the near-term revenue contribution unquantified.
