Ericsson stock gains new growth angle from 5G drone sensing

- Ericsson is positioning existing mobile networks as an additional sensing layer for defense, public safety and critical infrastructure.
- The technology has been tested with AT&T, Erillisverkot, Play and Asseco across several operating environments.
- The commercial opportunity remains dependent on customer adoption and the rollout of new network-based services.
Ericsson introduced a 5G-based system on November 2 that adds sensing capabilities to mobile networks, creating a new potential application for the telecom group's existing infrastructure. The company said selected customers are expected to begin small-scale, sensing-only commercial pilots in 2027, with broader deployments planned from 2028.
The Ericsson press release describes the Ericsson ISAC System as a way to detect and track moving objects, including drones that are not connected to a mobile network. It combines sensing-capable 5G radios, edge computing, artificial intelligence and signal processing across geographically separated network sites.
From network assets to sensing
The system analyzes radio reflections and uses multiple sites to view objects from different angles. Ericsson says validated tests detected and tracked micro drones at kilometer-scale distances with three-dimensional positioning. Actual performance depends on the target, its flight profile, sensing geometry, terrain and system configuration.
Ericsson presents the technology as a complement to radar and other sensors rather than a replacement. Demonstrations with AT&T in Arlington, Texas, and Erillisverkot in Helsinki tracked multiple drones. In Poland, Ericsson worked with Play and Asseco to combine network sensing with acoustic detection.
Commercial potential remains ahead
The planned applications include monitoring borders, coastlines and strategic assets, as well as protecting ports, power plants, transport facilities and other critical sites. The integrated communications capability is intended to develop as the solution moves toward 6G. For investors, the immediate significance is the prospect of new services built on infrastructure that mobile operators already operate, while revenue contribution still depends on pilots, deployment requirements and customer adoption.
