- Ericsson launched an ISAC system that detects and tracks drones through mobile-network infrastructure.
- The technology uses 5G radios, edge computing, artificial intelligence and signal processing alongside existing sensors.
- Trials with AT&T, Erillisverkot, Asseco and Play demonstrated applications in public safety and critical infrastructure.
Ericsson introduced its Ericsson ISAC System on November 2, 2026, adding sensing capabilities to mobile networks so defense, public-safety and critical-infrastructure operators can detect and track moving objects such as drones. The company said the system can also follow objects that are not connected to the network, according to its press release.
5G infrastructure becomes a sensor layer
The system analyzes radio signals reflected by objects in the environment. Ericsson combines sensing-capable 5G radios, edge computing, artificial intelligence and signal processing across geographically separated network sites, allowing objects to be viewed from multiple angles and tracked across a coverage area.
Ericsson said selected customers are expected to begin small-scale, sensing-only commercial pilots in 2027, with broader-scale sensing deployments expected from 2028. Integrated communications capabilities are planned as the solution evolves toward 6G. The company presents the system as a complement to radar and other sensors rather than a replacement.
Validated tests detected and tracked microdrones at kilometer-scale distances with precise three-dimensional positioning, although actual performance depends on the target, flight profile, terrain, sensing geometry and system configuration. Demonstrations with AT&T in Arlington, Texas, and Erillisverkot in Helsinki tracked multiple drones. In Poland, Ericsson worked with Play and Asseco to combine network sensing with acoustic detection.
Potential market for network-based security
The planned applications include monitoring borders, coastlines and strategic assets, as well as protecting ports, power plants, transport facilities and other critical sites. For Ericsson, the offering could create additional uses for existing mobile-network assets, but the commercial contribution remains dependent on customer pilots, deployment requirements and adoption.
