Enel's Chilean subsidiary is advancing four grid-scale battery projects with a combined capacity of 600 megawatts, adding a new operating signal ahead of the group's nine-month results. AD HOC NEWS reported the development on Wednesday, November 4, citing an October 29 Argus Media report that quoted Enel Chile chief executive Gianluca Palumbo.
Chile storage pipeline takes shape
The projects are designed to operate alongside existing solar and wind plants and use grid-forming technology. This can help maintain voltage and frequency as renewable generation takes a larger role in Chile's power system.
The first project is the 205-megawatt Las Salinas battery, which has connected to the grid and is expected to start commercial operations in 2027. The 153-megawatt Valle del Sol and 94-megawatt Azabache projects are also scheduled to start in 2027, while construction of the 100-megawatt Finis Terrae project began in August and is planned for commissioning in 2028.
Once all four facilities are complete, Enel Chile's battery storage capacity in the country is expected to reach 800 megawatts. For Enel, the pipeline extends storage's role beyond adding generation capacity and may support more stable operation of renewable assets.
Hydrology lifts Chile earnings
The storage update came with stronger operating figures at Enel Chile. January-to-September profit rose 11 percent year on year to 390 million US dollars, while hydro generation increased 3 percent to 8.2 terawatt-hours after heavier rainfall from August. Enel Chile is the country's largest generator, with installed capacity of 8.9 gigawatts.
Power prices, hydrology, construction execution and capital requirements remain important variables for future returns. The next major group event is Enel's nine-month results presentation, scheduled for November 12.
