- Margin quality, Middle East exposure and free cash flow will test the durability of the recent improvement.
Emerson Electric is approaching a key earnings test on Wednesday, November 4, when the industrial automation company will release its fourth-quarter and full-year fiscal 2026 results before the U.S. market opens. Emerson said in its earnings schedule that management will discuss the figures in a conference call the same day.
The central question is whether software renewal timing will reverse the weakness seen earlier in the fiscal year. A Drillr analysis published October 26 identifies Software & Systems growth, Intelligent Devices execution and cash generation as the main tests for the report.
Software renewal timing takes center stage
In fiscal third quarter 2026, Emerson generated 4.873 billion U.S. dollars in sales, up 7% from a year earlier. Underlying sales increased 6%, underlying orders rose 7%, adjusted segment EBITA margin reached 28.5% and adjusted earnings per share rose 13% to 1.71 U.S. dollars, according to the analysis.
Software & Systems grew 11% organically in the quarter, but the composition was uneven. Test and measurement advanced 23%, while control systems and software, which includes AspenTech, grew 7%. Management expects both parts of the segment to deliver 10% underlying growth in the fourth quarter and has maintained a full-year annual contract value target above 10%.
That target matters because Software & Systems carries Emerson's highest segment margin. A return of renewal revenue could therefore support both sales and profitability, although the company must show that the improvement is more than a temporary timing effect. Analysts compiled by Drillr expect fourth-quarter revenue of 5.109 billion U.S. dollars and earnings per share of 1.85 U.S. dollars.
Project conversion meets regional risks
Intelligent Devices remains the largest business. Third-quarter underlying growth was 5%, while its adjusted segment EBITA margin rose to 27.9%. The business benefits from demand in power, liquefied natural gas and other project markets, but Emerson also faces weaker conditions in China and Europe. The Middle East conflict created a third-quarter revenue headwind of 25 million U.S. dollars, and management expects a similar impact in the fourth quarter.
The next report should also show whether project orders are converting into shipments. The Drillr analysis cites a 12.4 billion U.S. dollar project funnel and backlog of about 9.6 billion U.S. dollars, with roughly three quarters expected to become revenue within 12 months. Delayed investment decisions in major liquefied natural gas and petrochemical projects remain a risk to that conversion.
Cash flow will test earnings quality
Emerson generated 1.323 billion U.S. dollars in free cash flow in the third quarter, up 36%. The quarter benefited from 82 million U.S. dollars in tariff refunds, while some tax payments shifted into the fourth quarter. Management has set full-year free cash flow guidance of about 3.6 billion U.S. dollars, making cash conversion an important measure of how much of the recent improvement is repeatable.

For investors, the November 4 release will clarify whether high-margin software revenue, project conversion and price-led growth can support Emerson's targets despite regional and geopolitical pressure.
