- Eckert & Ziegler Therapeutics received German authorization to manufacture Actinium-225 under Good Manufacturing Practice standards.
- The production route combines radium-226 irradiation in the Czech Republic with GMP-grade processing in Braunschweig.
- Further Ac-225 capacity is planned in China, while expansion in Germany and the United States remains under consideration.
Eckert & Ziegler Therapeutics GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eckert & Ziegler SE, received German authorization on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, to manufacture Actinium-225 under Good Manufacturing Practice standards. The company said the certification facilitates the use of the radioisotope in investigational patient treatments. The announcement was published by EQS News.
The authorization moves the company beyond initial production runs toward routine GMP-grade manufacturing, according to Dr. Gunnar Mann, the board member responsible for the Medical segment. Management described the approval as a step that turns production capability into a supply commitment for clinical and commercial programs. Actinium-225 is an alpha-emitting radioisotope used in the development of targeted radiopharmaceutical treatments.
Production route and supply security
Eckert & Ziegler's process begins with cyclotron-based irradiation of radium-226 at the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Rež. The irradiated material is then processed at the company's Braunschweig site to produce GMP-grade Ac-225. Isotope Technologies Dresden, a division of the group, supplies hot-cell systems supporting both production locations.
The company said its process keeps long-lived impurities, including Actinium-227 and Thorium-229, at low levels. It also recovers unconverted radium-226 after irradiation and reuses the material across multiple production cycles. That approach is intended to reduce exposure to constrained radium-226 inventories, limit radioactive waste and make future output volumes and costs more predictable.
Capacity plans extend beyond Germany
The group has opened an Ac-225 production facility through its Qi Kang Medical Technology joint venture in Jintan, China. The company plans a second phase after initial operations begin in early 2027, with the site intended to become China's first commercial-scale Ac-225 production facility. Eckert & Ziegler is also considering additional capacity at its radiopharmaceutical site near Boston and in Germany.
The approval strengthens the investment case for the Medical segment's isotope platform, but the commercial impact depends on the pace of clinical development, customer demand and the execution of the planned capacity expansion. The company generated EUR 312.0 million in revenue and EUR 77.7 million in adjusted EBIT in 2025, according to its investor information, while employing 1,116 people.
