- Eckert & Ziegler Therapeutics received authorization for GMP-grade Actinium-225 production.
- The production chain combines radium irradiation in the Czech Republic with processing in Braunschweig.
- A commercial-scale joint-venture facility in China is planned to begin initial operations in early 2027.
Eckert & Ziegler Therapeutics GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eckert & Ziegler SE, received manufacturing authorization for Actinium-225 on October 28. The German certification confirms that the production process meets Good Manufacturing Practice requirements and facilitates the radioisotope's use in investigational patient treatments, according to the EQS announcement carried by Placera.
From pilot runs to routine supply
Actinium-225 is an alpha-emitting radioisotope used in targeted radiopharmaceutical research. Eckert & Ziegler said the authorization moves its activity from initial production runs in an upscaled process toward routine GMP manufacturing, creating a supply platform for clinical and commercial programs.
The production route starts with cyclotron-based irradiation of Radium-226 at the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Rež, Czech Republic. The irradiated material is then processed at the company's Braunschweig site to produce GMP-grade Ac-225. Isotope Technologies Dresden, Eckert & Ziegler's hot-cell division, supports both locations with specialized systems.
The company also said its process keeps long-lived impurities such as Actinium-227 and Thorium-229 to a minimum. Recovered Radium-226 can be returned to the production cycle, which is intended to reduce dependence on constrained precursor inventories and support more predictable output volumes and costs for isotope supply and contract development and manufacturing programs.
Expansion remains the next step
Dr. Gunnar Mann, a member of Eckert & Ziegler's executive board responsible for the Medical segment, described the authorization as a step that turns production capability into a supply commitment for clinical and commercial programs. The announcement did not include revenue or earnings targets for Ac-225, so the near-term financial impact remains tied to production ramp-up and future customer programs.
A newly opened joint-venture facility in Jintan, China, is intended to become the country's first commercial-scale Ac-225 production site. The company plans to start initial operations in early 2027 before realizing a second phase. Further capacity expansion near Boston and in Germany may also support future commercial supply of Ac-225-based medicines.
