Higher earnings, tighter guidance
The company narrowed its 2026 adjusted earnings-per-share guidance to USD 6.70 to USD 6.80 from a previous range of USD 6.55 to USD 6.80. Management said strong performance through the first three quarters positioned Duke Energy to deliver near the upper end of the revised range. It also reaffirmed a long-term adjusted EPS growth target of 5% to 7% through 2030, based on the 2025 guidance midpoint of USD 6.30.
Management does not provide a long-term forecast for reported GAAP earnings per share. The company said the quarterly improvement reflected recovery of infrastructure investments in growing service territories and favorable weather. Higher depreciation on the expanding asset base, minority-interest effects, higher interest expense and a higher effective tax rate partly offset those gains.
Electric segment drives performance
Electric Utilities and Infrastructure generated segment income of USD 1.817 billion, up from USD 1.658 billion in the third quarter of 2025. The improvement included a USD 0.20 contribution per share from the segment, with rate-case impacts, customer volume and weather supporting the result. Gas Utilities and Infrastructure reported a USD 19 million loss, an improvement from a USD 26 million loss a year earlier.
Group revenue increased to USD 9.104 billion from USD 8.542 billion. Net income available to common shareholders was USD 1.551 billion, compared with USD 1.407 billion in the prior-year quarter. The reported effective tax rate rose to 15.3% from 10.8%, mainly because of lower amortization of excess deferred income taxes.
Capacity build remains central
Duke Energy is executing a generation expansion aimed at adding 16 gigawatts of capacity by 2031. Chief Executive Harry Sideris said the company was continuing to invest in reliable service while managing costs, with growth across its states creating opportunities to support customers and communities.
The next scheduled investor event is the earnings conference call at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on November 5, hosted by Sideris and Chief Financial Officer Brian Savoy. The discussion is expected to focus on quarterly performance, the revised earnings range and the capital program.
The broader market backdrop remains relevant for utility valuations through the S&P 500.
