Telefónica and Minsait have been selected as one of two successful tenderers to deploy communications and security infrastructure for a future digital euro. The announcement was published on Monday, November 2, 2026, and was reported by WebWire.
The consortium will connect the European Central Bank ecosystem with private and public payment facilitators, banks, fintech companies and payment service providers. Telefónica will contribute communications infrastructure through Telefónica Global Solutions and Telefónica Tech, while Minsait will provide application integration, digital identity, trust services and cybersecurity capabilities.
Secure networks form the core
The planned infrastructure combines an MPLS network, SD-WAN capabilities and cybersecurity services. These systems are intended to connect different locations securely and support the exchange of information between the participants in the future digital euro ecosystem. Minsait will add API-based integration, certificates, access controls, encryption and security monitoring.
The contract is scheduled to enter into force on May 3, 2027, and runs for 10 years. The project is designed to support a digital means of payment that would complement cash across the euro area. The announcement does not disclose financial terms for Telefónica, so the immediate investment relevance lies in the company's positioning in critical communications, cloud and cybersecurity infrastructure rather than in a quantified earnings contribution.
Results provide the next test
Telefónica's next scheduled corporate milestone is the publication of its January-September 2026 results on Thursday, November 12, according to the company's shareholder and investor calendar. That report will give investors a broader basis for assessing operating trends, cash generation and the contribution potential of business-to-business technology activities.
