DBS Group stock: Q3 profit misses forecasts as trading income falls

DBS Group stock entered a tougher earnings debate after third-quarter profit fell short of forecasts. Wealth fees and the 2027 outlook offer support.

Earnings Miss Meets Wealth Growth

  • DBS Group's third-quarter profit missed expectations as weaker markets trading income outweighed resilient customer businesses.
  • Wealth management fees and net fee income increased, supporting the bank's structural growth story.
  • Management expects mid-single-digit total income growth in 2027 and will change chairmanship at the start of the year.

DBS Group reported a weaker third quarter on Thursday, November 5, as lower markets trading income pushed profit below analysts' expectations. CNA said net profit for the July-to-September period fell 5% year on year to S$2.81 billion, below the S$2.90 billion average forecast from four analysts surveyed by LSEG.

The main drag came from markets trading income, which fell 65% year on year to S$152 million. DBS attributed the decline to unfavourable equity market conditions, as global uncertainty and volatile financial markets weighed on trading activity. The result shows how a strong customer franchise can still face earnings pressure when capital-markets income deteriorates sharply.

Customer Businesses Cushion Pressure

DBS retained support from wealth management and fee-generating businesses. Wealth management fees rose 9% from a high base to S$864 million, while net fee income increased 6% to S$1.43 billion. Transaction services fees reached a new high, and loan-related and card fees also advanced.

The bank's net interest margin narrowed by nine basis points from a year earlier to 1.87%. That keeps the lending outlook in focus as interest-rate conditions change. The quarter therefore combined resilient fee growth with pressure on both trading income and lending profitability.

Management maintained a constructive medium-term view despite the softer quarter. DBS expects total income to rise in the mid-single-digit range in 2027, assuming two further US Federal Reserve rate hikes by the end of next year, gradual increases in domestic interest rates and a stronger Singapore dollar. The bank also expects structural growth in wealth management to continue.

Chief executive Tan Su Shan said the global economic outlook had become more uncertain and that DBS would remain nimble while managing risks prudently. For investors, the key question is whether recurring customer income can continue to offset more volatile trading results as the bank moves into 2027.

Leadership Change Adds A Second Focus

DBS also announced a planned leadership transition. Independent director Anthony Lim will become chairman on January 1, 2027, succeeding Peter Seah, who will retire on December 31 after 16 years in the role and then serve as senior adviser for one year. The change separates the earnings debate from a governance transition that investors will monitor over the coming months.
