- Third-quarter revenue rose 12 percent, while total volume increased 5 percent, according to Trefis.

- Intermodal service reliability remains the next operating test before the expected January 2027 update.
CSX Corp. is moving into a new phase after a strong third quarter: investors are weighing productivity gains against the railroad's ability to maintain service quality. Trefis said in an October 29 analysis that management has shifted the emphasis from network repairs toward productivity, profitability and free cash flow.
During the October 21 earnings call, executives said more than 100 initiatives are contributing to the company's 2027 productivity target, according to Trefis. Management also said third-quarter fuel efficiency was the best reported by any US railroad, while velocity, dwell and customer switch data improved from the second quarter.
Growth raises the execution bar
CSX reported third-quarter revenue of 4.02 billion US dollars, up 12 percent year over year, while total volume increased 5 percent. Trefis attributed the advance to higher fuel surcharges, volume growth and pricing gains. Non-fuel costs fell 3 percent as the company handled the additional freight.
The operating picture is not uniformly strong. Trefis said carload trip plan compliance improved modestly, but intermodal compliance declined. That leaves intermodal service reliability as a key test because CSX is seeking to capture freight from trucks. The company plans to add train and engine employees in 2027 to support higher volumes.
Analyst target reflects rail momentum
Markets Insider reported on October 27 that Susquehanna raised its CSX price target to 60 US dollars from 55 US dollars and retained a Positive rating. The analyst cited industrial growth and intermodal conversions as support for a stronger 2027 pricing opportunity.
